Been thinking about getting a seedbox for some time now and was wondering whether any members were using one and could recommned a hosting service. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have a pretty decent internet connection so i just have a utorrent server that i use as a seedbox.  But maybe this will help:

Cheers jdomnitz I'll have a look. My download speeds are OK, but uploading is an absolute pain.

What's kinda connection do you have?

If you're in a team, you'll be able to blame it on your team members, and that's one of the reasons for working in a team, but if you're working by yourself and your program has errors, all you can do is blame it on Microsoft.

Arne my friend - hope everything going well - new build is excellent by the way - no major issues. My broadband connection is up to 16mbit (apologies if abbreviations are incorrect - still inexperienced in all things techy). I ran a speed test and the download speed registered as 4088 kb/s and 720 kb/s upload. Real time monitoring from my utorrent client would indicate that download speeds are approx. 900 kb/s with uploads around the 100 kb/s mark. Don't know if this is good or bad, or whether a seedbox would dramatically improve this situation. I am keeping reasonable ratios on various sites, but only as a result of 24/7 seeding for extreme periods of time.

Thanks

All is good.. Well, as good as can be anyway :)

Ok. On a 16Mbps connection you could theoretically reach speeds of 2MB/s - in real life you won't due to stack overheads and whatnot, but it's close. Of course, if this is a DSL connection your actual speed also depends on other factors like the distance to the exchange and quality of cable.

If the max you've ever seen is 900KB/s I would consider downgrading the package to an 8Mbps connection - no use paying for bandwidth you'll never make use of.

So that's your down speed. Up I'm guessing you have 1Mbps - which in theory gives you a maximum upload speed of 128KB/s. The 100KB/s you reported fits in fine with this.

So, the 100KB/s you get will allow uploads of around 1GB every third hour. Whilst that isn't great, it should easily be enough to seed back to a ratio of 1 thruout the day (depending on how much you download of course).

If you're willing to seed 24/7 I would just continue doing that rather than investing in a 'seedbox'. Sure, if you get a 100/100Mbps shell your torrent up/down speeds will be greatly improved, but you still have to transfer the actual file to your own computer (of course, you no longer have to seed locally - but personally I don't think it's worth it).

Oh, as a side note - if you live fairly close to your exchange and cannot get better down speeds than 900KB/s you should try to find out what's stopping performance. Could be that your router isn't fast enough, you're using a wlan rather than cabled lan or your computer is simply not up to the task.

If you're in a team, you'll be able to blame it on your team members, and that's one of the reasons for working in a team, but if you're working by yourself and your program has errors, all you can do is blame it on Microsoft.

He He Stick out tongue, wlan's, lan's, router's - maybe I should just have had a lightning strike - only joking.

The price difference in tariff between 8Mb and 16Mb is negligible, therefore price isn't a factor - though I understand where you coming from. It is a DSL connection, cabled not wireless (which is what I assume wlan is referring to) and I am probably around 1 mile from the exchange. Any tips on increasing performance from a torrent client angle (I'm using utorrent). I think I may be spreading myself too thinly, by uploading to too many seeders - currently set at 10 active torrents. Should I perhaps limit the number of torrents more?

As you can see I'm fairly new to this game, but loving the range and quality of some of the downloads from sites out there. I am managing to achieve reasonable ratios of between 6 and 10 on most trackers, and if you're opinion is that a seed box isn't worth it, then I'm happy to take your advice. However any help you can pass my way would be appreciated.

Just noticed the donation button - alert as always Surprise (sent a small something to help you along)

Thanks

The is it worth it question is really up to how you use it.  Im sure we could squeeze a little more out of your connection but would that be enough?  I have no doubt if you had a seedbox you would find a way to utilize all its bandwidth - and then the next post will be on hard drive recommendations :)

I have a 30mbit down/10mbit up connection and as cool as the occasional 3Mb/s downspeed is - very few torrents have the swarm speed to support it.  Downloads wont be too much faster on a seedbox but you could probably get away with 20-25 torrents at a time

Ha Ha - you're second guessing me now mate Smile the issue of disc capacity was going to be my next question. Appreciate what you're saying about the swarm speeds, with few exceptions there are few that have high swarm speeds. Will just stick with what I have, I'm not doing too badly with the 24/7 connection, but like my wife - I'm always looking for that little bit extra Wink

For what it's worth have you thought about getting stuff from newsgroups rather than torrents?

I always used to use torrents but on my 20 MB connection, I can download standard res shows in about 3 minutes and the HD ones in 8.

Glenn - only just got to grips with torrents. What is needed for newsgroups? Confused

Glenn replied on Thu, Aug 28 2008 21:42

I use Usenext which although you have to pay for it works so well and fast that I have never looked back at Torrents again.

I have tried various other newsgroup software/readers etc but they all blew my mind.

If you want any more info, please let me know.

They have a 14 day trial for 1euro but after that you pay monthly.  It is the most efficient use of bandwidth but it really depends on usage.  I easily download 30+GB a month and couldnt justify spending $20+ month for something I could do for free.  If you use less and have a slower connection it may make more sense for you.

I have always been a little bit worried about the monitoring by MPAA etc but also found that Torrents slowed my connection down quite a bit.

I subscribe to the 75 GB a month as I seem to be downloading so many TV shows.

For me, the $25 a month is worth it but of course you can get it for nothing via Torrents.

Guys

Thanks for the heads up - I've signed up for the trial period - won't do any harm to try it out. Though having just discovered this download lark, I've become a download freak - snatching everything I can possibly get my hands on - perhaps through time I will be become a little more circumspect in my download habits, or perhaps my disc space (or lack of) will dictate. But like you jdomnitz I download much more than the newsgroups are offering, particularly with HD content. Guess its very much a patience thing, wait for the torrent or get it immediately with newsgroups at a cost.

'Fraid I'm the stereotypical 'tight' Scotsman - probably will go with the system that costs the least amount. Will let you know what I think during the trial.

Thanks again for your help.
